Background
Macca’s supply chain is unique. Our supply chain model is based on a culture of partnership and collaboration which makes it possible for us to serve consistently safe and high quality food.
It is important to us that our suppliers operate sustainable and profitable businesses and benefit from their partnership with McDonald’s Australia. It is equally important to us that we source our products in a responsible and ethical manner that contributes to the development of sustainable agriculture and food manufacturing processes.
Within our supply chain we consider that we have responsibilities to our suppliers and the community in three key areas:

There are several business cases for supporting sustainable supply chains (Reference from B. Gail Smith, 2007 August):
Explaining the first one as an example in my own words:
Manufacturers have to produce safe and healthy products to satisfy the demand of the market, because the consumers should be noticed clearly about the accurate and informative labelling and nutritional information about the food they would buy. Meanwhile, being satisfying needs the manufacturers make good business sense while supporting the development of sustainable food supply chains.
- Creating consumer value for more nutritious, healthier products;
- Creating consumer value from sustainable procurement;
- Supply chain action as part of CSR.

How to make a good food supply chain?
- Working with standards and suppliers
- Beyond standards (Reference from B. Gail Smith, 2007 August)
These two points show clearly that in order to develop a sustainable food supply chains, the most basic step is working with standards and the suppliers to learn basic knowledge about food supply chains as much as possible; and then, the second step is to develop further to beyond the standards and make a more sustainable food supply chains.
McDonald's Australia has an efficient sustainable food supply chain from the raw materials to the consumption of customers.
- First, McDonald's Australia uses the most economic way to produce their products, which means this company use most raw materials produced in Australia because they are appropriate manufactured here. This can help McDonald's Australia use less money to produce safer food for the consumers.
- Moreover, McDonald's Australia tries best to minimize its impact on the environment. This company suggests its suppliers to protect the sources when they get the raw materials, and provides scorecards to survey the related product waste and air quality to measure the suppliers' environmental performance.

- French Fries supplier, McCain, has developed a new potato variety that meets McDonald’s quality requirements whilst providing greater productivity and environmental benefits. The potato uses significantly less irrigation water than other potato crops. In comparison to the potato variety used primarily by McDonald’s, this new variety is also more adaptable to dry conditions and more resistant to common pests and diseases. This means a reduction in the pesticide and fungicide used by farmers and also makes the safe storage of the potato simpler.
- With a commitment to reducing waste to landfill McKey Distribution recycles all waste cardboard and pallet wrap generated by incoming goods at each of their six Australian distribution centres.
- Consumer packaging comes from legal and acceptable sources.
